Mulch Madness at Fort Greene Park

Read it at The Local.

The chipper in Fort Greene Park was loud over the weekend, but not loud enough to drown out local gardeners who got their fill of free mulch. Like many who loyally deposit holiday trees each Mulchfest, an annual event planned each January by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, we were curious as to what our neighbors do with that tree after it’s shredded.

“Dirt is expensive, so if you can make your own, why not?” said Richard Thomas, who grows berries and vegetables in a container garden on his rooftop.

He’s one of many who gave us tips on the uses and benefits of chipped pine. Listen to our audio slideshow above to see and hear what else we found.
